The Tree Of Life

She’d been adopted when very young, and her new mother and father were fundamentalist Christians of some variety. She’d complained about them to him as they talked and had a smoke, between classes, outside their high school. And he moaned to her about his unhappy home life. They’d met in English class and seemed to like each other.

One day, while they stood outside the school and talked, he asked her if she would like to walk over to his house and see his room. He told her that he was certain that neither of his parents would come home and surprise them while they were in his basement bedroom. So at lunch hour they walked together to his room, and within minutes had undressed and given new meaning to their friendship. They were both all smiles as they walked back to classes after their encounter.

One evening, while he was at home doing homework, his father called out to him that there was a girl on the phone for him. It was her! “My parents are gone for the night. Do you want to come over?” she said to him seductively. ”I’m on my way!” he responded, hung up, then heard his father asking, “Who was that?”

“We have English class together and she needs help with her homework. I won’t be gone long.” He was out the door and flying on his bike before more questioning.

He arrived at her house quickly and leaned his bike against a tree in the back yard, then met her at the front door. They hurried up the stairs, entered her bedroom, and were naked within seconds. He couldn’t believe his good fortune! The ways of love were mysterious but seemed to move at breakneck speed and in logical fashion. What a wonderful way to spend what had otherwise been a boring night of homework! Her enthusiasm and knowledgeable ways in bed seemed to him heaven sent.

As they lay with pounding hearts, he smelled and then saw there was blood all over their bodies and bed sheets. “I forgot to tell you that it’s that time of month. I’m sorry,” she said. He grinned and was close to dozing off.

“I also haven’t told you about my fiancee. We’re getting married when I graduate. He’s already in college.”

This declaration woke him. He was confused. Fiancee? They heard a loud sound downstairs, and she cried out, “Oh my god! They’re home! I hear the garage door opening. My dad will shoot you if he finds you here!”

He saw the tree just outside her bedroom window, gathered his clothes, crawled through the window, and climbed down to the ground. His heart was ready to burst as he pulled his pants on, donned his shoes, wrapped his shirt around his waist, grabbed the bicycle he’d conveniently propped against the tree, and took off pedaling for his life.

“Were you able to help your friend with her homework?” his father asked as he walked into the house half an hour later.
